Marion sports club | Carbon trading | Rubbish land fill

I was honoured to be invited to attend the 100 year celebratory dinner in the excellent public dining area of the Marion sports and Community club. The Sunday markets (1st & 3rd) are great fun. We were all pleased to hear that the Federal Govt will honour a promise of $1m towards the expansion of the main building planned over the past 3 years. This is an outstanding community managed facility for a quiet family meal or for participation in any of the activities available. Why not become a member and share in the national association opportunities?

Carbon Trading and our Rubbish landfill operation.

With global warming  and carbon trading a topical concern, it is appropriate to mention the excellent work our Southern Region Waste Resource Association is doing in operating a “state of the art” landfill operation at Pedlers creek.

A completed landfill cell is like a very well engineered “pie” full of thousands of tonnes of compacted, composting, red bin, rubbish. The bottom “crust” is made of impervious clay, a thick plastic membrane, another layer of clay, and a layer of gravel. Throughout the “meat” are networks of pipes that take the water (leachate) to a treatment dam. Another network of wells carries the greenhouse gas (methane) to an electricity generator that feeds into the power grid. The “crust” is made of clay and topsoil. Native grasses rather than trees and shrubs grow on the crust to maintain the natural water content of the topsoil in all weather conditions.

I believe this facility will meet the greenhouse mitigation guidelines for a good carbon trading audit.
